The 2015 Melbourne Cup winner was Prince of Penzance, a six-year-old gelding trained by Darren Weir and ridden by Michelle Payne. He was the first horse to win the prestigious race at odds of 100 to 1 since 1936. He also made history by giving Payne the distinction of being the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup in its 155-year history. Prince of Penzance beat the runner-up Max Dynamite by half a length, while Criterion finished third. The race was marred by the injury of Red Cadeaux, who fractured his leg and was later euthanized.
